"I think so." "Experts think inflation will rise." "I thought you'd left." English wheels out one verb, think, for all three, but the mental acts are different — a soft hunch, a reasoned position, and a mistaken assumption — and Chinese assigns a different verb to each. 觉得 is a subjective feeling or impression, tentative and everyday, and it uniquely doubles as physical "feel." 认为 is a considered judgment, firmer and more formal, the verb of arguments and expert opinion. 以为 is the tricky one: it means you thought something that turned out to be false. Reach for 以为 by mistake and you'll accidentally announce that your own opinion was wrong. This page is the decision grid; the finer split between 认为 and 以为 gets its own treatment on 认为 vs 以为, and 觉得's full range on 觉得 to feel/think.
The three-way grid
| Verb | Kind of "think" | Strength / register | Signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| 觉得 (juéde) | impression / feeling | soft, everyday | also physical: 觉得累 |
| 认为 (rènwéi) | considered judgment | firm, formal | arguments, experts, positions |
| 以为 (yǐwéi) | mistaken belief | neutral | implies "…but I was wrong" |
觉得: a soft impression — and physical feelings
觉得 is the default for personal opinion in speech: gentle, tentative, "in my view / it seems to me." It is also the only one of the three that expresses a bodily or emotional sensation — tired, cold, uncomfortable — because it literally means "to feel."
wǒ juéde zhè jiā diàn de wèidào tǐng búcuò de
I think this place's food is pretty good. (informal) — a soft impression.
nǐ juéde wǒmen gāi zǒu nǎ tiáo lù?
Which way do you think we should go? (informal) — asking for an impression.
wǒ juéde yǒudiǎn lěng, bǎ chuānghu guān yíxià ba
I feel a bit cold — close the window, would you? (informal) — physical sensation, which only 觉得 covers.
认为: a considered judgment, more formal
认为 states a position you've weighed — firmer than 觉得 and at home in formal, written, or argumentative contexts: expert opinion, editorials, reasoned claims. It takes a clause, never a bare physical state.
hěnduō zhuānjiā rènwéi fángjià hái huì jìxù xiàjiàng
Many experts hold that housing prices will keep falling. (formal) — considered judgment.
wǒ rènwéi zhège fāng'àn yǒu hěn dà de wèntí, bìxū chóngxīn tǎolùn
I hold that this plan has serious problems and must be reconsidered. (formal) — a firm stance.
以为: what you thought — and got wrong
以为 marks a belief that reality has since overturned. The sentence almost always implies, and often spells out, the correction: I assumed X, but in fact not-X.
wǒ yǐwéi jīntiān shì zhōuliù, jiéguǒ hái děi shàngbān
I thought today was Saturday — turns out I still have work. (informal) — belief now corrected.
wǒ yìzhí yǐwéi nǐ shì nánfāng rén, yuánlái nǐ shì Běijīng de
I'd always thought you were a southerner — turns out you're from Beijing. (informal)
duìbuqǐ, wǒ yǐwéi nǐ bù lái le, jiù xiān zǒu le
Sorry — I thought you weren't coming, so I left first. (informal) — the assumption was mistaken.
Soft vs firm: 觉得 next to 认为
觉得 and 认为 can both introduce the same clause; the difference is strength and register. 我觉得他会来 is a hunch; 我认为他一定会来 is a stated position. In casual conversation you'll lean on 觉得 (and the hedging fillers on spoken stance fillers); in an essay or a debate, 认为.
wǒ juéde tā huì lái, dàn wǒ bù gǎn kěndìng
I think he'll come, but I'm not certain. (informal) — tentative, so 觉得.
bàogào rènwéi, zhè yì qūshì duǎnqī nèi bú huì gǎibiàn
The report holds that this trend won't change in the short term. (formal) — an institutional judgment.
Common Mistakes
1. Using 以为 for an opinion that's still correct. 以为 announces you were wrong; for a current, held view use 觉得 or 认为.
This means 'I thought it was good (but it wasn't)'; for a genuine opinion say
wǒ juéde zhège diànyǐng hěn hǎokàn, nǐ yě qù kànkan ba
I think this movie's great — go see it too. — 觉得 for a real opinion.
2. Using 认为 or 以为 for a physical feeling. Only 觉得 covers "feel tired / cold / hungry."
Wrong — a bodily state needs
wǒ juéde hěn lèi, xiǎng xiūxi yíxià
I feel really tired and want to rest a bit. — 觉得 for the sensation.
3. Using formal 认为 in casual small talk. For everyday chat it sounds stiff and lecture-like; 觉得 fits.
Too stiff for chatting about ice cream — say
wǒ juéde zhège bīngqílín hěn hǎochī, nǐ cháng yì kǒu
I think this ice cream's delicious — have a taste. — 觉得 for casual opinion.
4. Using these for "think about / ponder." 觉得/认为/以为 all mean "hold a view," not "turn something over"; the mental process is 想 or 考虑.
Wrong — to mull it over say
ràng wǒ xiǎng yíxià, míngtiān gěi nǐ dáfù
Let me think it over — I'll give you an answer tomorrow. — 想 for the act of thinking.
Key Takeaways
- 觉得 = a soft, subjective impression (我觉得不错), and the only one that also means physically feel (觉得累).
- 认为 = a firmer, more formal considered judgment (专家认为…) — arguments, experts, essays.
- 以为 = a belief that turned out wrong (我以为今天周六); using it implies you were mistaken.
- Don't use 以为 for a view that's still true, and don't use 认为/以为 for bodily feelings.
- For "ponder / think it over," none of these works — use 想 or 考虑.
