Chinese gives you two tools for the same job: softening a verb into "do it briefly / a little / just quickly." One is reduplication — 看看, 帮帮我. The other is verb + 一下 — 看一下, 帮我一下 (see 一下 as a verbal measure word). In the vast majority of everyday sentences they are interchangeable: 你看看 ≈ 你看一下, 你尝尝 ≈ 你尝一下, 帮帮我 ≈ 帮我一下. This page is about the thin but real line between them — when each sounds more natural — so you can pick the one a native speaker would.
Where they overlap
For a short, friendly request built on a common action verb, either form works and neither is more "correct." Both take the blunt edge off an imperative. If you are ever unsure, both will sound fine to a native ear.
你看看这个 / 你看一下这个。
nǐ kànkan zhège / nǐ kàn yíxià zhège
Have a look at this. (informal) — both forms are natural and equivalent.
帮帮我 / 帮我一下,行吗?
bāng bang wǒ / bāng wǒ yíxià, xíng ma?
Give me a hand, would you? (informal) — either softener works.
你去问一问 / 问一下前台。
nǐ qù wèn yi wèn / wèn yíxià qiántái
Go ask the front desk. (informal) — reduplication or 一下, both fine.
The subtle difference
Three things separate them once you listen closely.
1. Feel. Reduplication is warmer and more personal — it invites the listener to go ahead and do the action as much as they like: 你尝尝 says "help yourself, taste away." 一下 is more neutral and transactional — it frames a single, quick instance: 你尝一下 says "just try one bite." So in hospitable, coaxing contexts, reduplication feels more at home; in brisk, get-it-done contexts, 一下.
2. Reach. 一下 attaches to almost any verb, including ones that reduplicate awkwardly. Verbs like 借 (borrow), 用 (use), 确认 (confirm), 通知 (notify) take 一下 comfortably, while their reduplications sound off or childish. If a verb resists doubling, 一下 is your safe default.
3. Register. 一下 slides into slightly more formal and service settings — 请稍等一下 (please wait a moment) — where a chummy reduplication would feel too casual.
| VV (reduplication) | V + 一下 | |
|---|---|---|
| Core sense | do a bit, freely | do once, one quick instance |
| Feel | warm, personal, inviting | neutral, transactional |
| Reach | volitional verbs that double well | almost any verb |
| Register | casual / intimate | casual through semi-formal service |
快尝尝,这是我拿手菜。
kuài chángchang, zhè shì wǒ náshǒu cài
Go on, have a taste — this is my signature dish. (informal) — warm, coaxing: reduplication fits.
我用一下你的充电器,马上还你。
wǒ yòng yíxià nǐ de chōngdiànqì, mǎshàng huán nǐ
Let me use your charger for a sec, I'll give it right back. (informal) — 用 prefers 一下.
请稍等一下,我帮您查一下。
qǐng shāo děng yíxià, wǒ bāng nín chá yíxià
Please wait a moment; I'll look it up for you. (formal, service) — 一下 suits the polite register.
麻烦你确认一下时间和地点。
máfan nǐ quèrèn yíxià shíjiān hé dìdiǎn
Please confirm the time and place. (semi-formal) — 确认 takes 一下, not reduplication.
Word order: where the object sits
The two patterns place a pronoun object differently, and this trips learners up. With reduplication, a pronoun object comes after the doubled verb: 帮帮我, 等等我. With 一下, a pronoun object usually comes before 一下: 帮我一下, 等我一下. A full noun object can follow 一下 directly: 看一下这张地图.
等等我,我马上就来!
děngdeng wǒ, wǒ mǎshàng jiù lái!
Wait for me — I'm coming right now! (informal) — pronoun after the reduplication.
等我一下,我去拿个东西。
děng wǒ yíxià, wǒ qù ná ge dōngxi
Wait for me a sec — I'll go grab something. (informal) — pronoun before 一下.
Common Mistakes
1. Stacking both softeners. Pick one. You cannot combine reduplication and 一下 on the same verb.
❌ 你帮帮我一下。
Incorrect — don't stack the two softeners; use 帮帮我 or 帮我一下.
✅ 帮我一下。
bāng wǒ yíxià
Give me a hand. — one softener, cleanly.
2. Reduplicating a verb that prefers 一下. Some verbs sound wrong doubled; use 一下.
❌ 借借你的字典。
Incorrect — 借 doesn't reduplicate naturally; say 借一下.
✅ 借一下你的字典。
jiè yíxià nǐ de zìdiǎn
Let me borrow your dictionary for a sec. — 借一下 is the natural form.
3. Wrong object placement with 一下. A pronoun object goes before 一下, not after.
❌ 等一下我。
Incorrect — the pronoun goes before 一下: 等我一下 (or 等等我).
✅ 等我一下。
děng wǒ yíxià
Wait for me a sec. — pronoun before 一下.
4. Dropping 了 for a completed past action. Neither softener marks the past by itself; a finished brief action still needs 了.
❌ 昨天他看一下我的作业就走了。
Incorrect — the action is completed; add 了 (看了一下) or use 看了看.
✅ 昨天他看了看我的作业就走了。
zuótiān tā kàn le kàn wǒ de zuòyè jiù zǒu le
Yesterday he glanced at my homework and left. — completed brief action uses 了; see V了V.
Key Takeaways
- 看看 and 看一下 both soften a verb to "do it briefly / a little" and are interchangeable in most everyday requests.
- Reduplication feels warm, personal, inviting ("taste away"); 一下 is neutral and transactional ("just once") and reaches almost any verb, including formal service speech.
- If a verb reduplicates awkwardly (借, 用, 确认, 通知), use 一下.
- Word order differs: pronoun after the reduplication (帮帮我), pronoun before 一下 (帮我一下).
- Never stack them (*看看一下), and remember neither marks the past — a completed brief action still needs 了.

- Verb Reduplication: The Tentative/Brief SenseHSK 2 — Doubling a verb — 看看 (kànkan), 试试 (shìshi), 尝尝 (chángchang) — softens it to 'have a quick look / give it a try / do a bit of'. It's a built-in politeness device, not a repeated action, and the second syllable drops to neutral tone.
- 下 (Brief Actions / 一下)HSK 1 — 下 (xià) counts brief, discrete actions (敲了三下), and in the everyday 一下 (yíxià) it softens a verb into 'do a bit / for a moment' — 等一下, 看一下, 试一下. It's the single most useful politeness softener in spoken Chinese.
- Softeners: …一下 and …一点儿HSK 2 — Two little tails shrink a request so it feels like a small favor: …一下 (yíxià) after a verb ('just / real quick' — 看一下, 等一下) and …一点儿 (yìdiǎnr) after an adjective ('a bit' — 便宜一点儿, 小声一点儿). Both make an ask sound smaller, and therefore easier to grant.
- 一下 vs 一点儿 — Brief Action vs Small AmountHSK 2 — Both soften, but they attach to different things. 一下 (yíxià) follows a VERB and softens the action — 'briefly, once, give it a quick…' (看一下 'take a quick look', 等一下 'wait a sec'). 一点儿 (yìdiǎnr) marks a SMALL AMOUNT or degree — a little of a noun (吃一点儿 'eat a little') or a small nudge on an adjective (大一点儿 'a bit bigger'). Ask whether you're softening the verb or measuring the amount.
