下 (xià) is a verbal measure word with two closely related jobs. With a real number it counts short, discrete motions — 敲了三下 (qiāo le sān xià, "knocked three times"), 拍了两下 (pāi le liǎng xià, "patted twice"). But by far its most important form is 一下 (yíxià), tacked onto a verb to mean "do a bit / for a moment / just quickly." 等一下 (děng yíxià) "wait a sec," 看一下 (kàn yíxià) "take a quick look," 试一下 (shì yíxià) "give it a try." Here 一下 is barely counting at all — it is the everyday softener that turns a blunt command into a light, polite request. If you learn only one verbal measure word, learn this one.
一下 as a softener — the everyday use
A bare verb in the imperative can sound abrupt, almost barked: 等! (Wait!), 看! (Look!). Adding 一下 rounds it off into something casual and friendly — "hang on a sec," "have a quick look." This is the tone-management use, and it is everywhere in spoken Chinese.
你等一下,我马上就来。
nǐ děng yíxià, wǒ mǎshàng jiù lái
Wait a sec, I'll be right there. (informal) — 等一下 softens 'wait' into a gentle request.
我看一下菜单,你先点。
wǒ kàn yíxià càidān, nǐ xiān diǎn
Let me take a quick look at the menu — you order first. (informal) — 看一下, just a quick look.
麻烦你帮我拿一下那个包。
máfan nǐ bāng wǒ ná yíxià nàge bāo
Could you grab that bag for me? (polite) — 拿一下 makes the request light and easy to grant.
你试一下这件衣服吧,应该挺合适。
nǐ shì yíxià zhè jiàn yīfu ba, yīnggāi tǐng héshì
Try this on — it should fit nicely. (informal) — 试一下, give it a quick try.
一下 ≈ verb reduplication
一下 is close in feel to verb reduplication (看看, 试试, 想想), which softens in the same casual, tentative direction. In many contexts they are interchangeable: 看一下 ≈ 看看, 想一下 ≈ 想想. Both say "give the action a light, brief go" rather than committing to it fully.
让我想一下,别催我。
ràng wǒ xiǎng yíxià, bié cuī wǒ
Let me think for a moment — stop rushing me. (informal) — 想一下, a brief think; 想想 would feel the same.
你先介绍一下你自己,好吗?
nǐ xiān jièshào yíxià nǐ zìjǐ, hǎo ma?
Introduce yourself a little first, would you? (polite) — 介绍一下, a brief, low-pressure introduction.
The one difference: with a pronoun object, the pronoun comes first and 一下 follows it — 等我一下 (děng wǒ yíxià), never *等一下我.
等我一下!我马上下来。
děng wǒ yíxià! wǒ mǎshàng xiàlái
Wait for me a sec! I'm coming right down. (informal) — pronoun 我 before 一下.
下 as a genuine count of short actions
When you attach a real number, 下 goes back to counting — specifically short, repeated physical motions: knocks, pats, kicks, shakes, taps, nods. Each 下 is one brief stroke of the action.
| Verb | With 下 | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 敲 qiāo | 敲了三下 | knocked three times |
| 拍 pāi | 拍了两下 | patted twice |
| 按 àn | 按一下 | give it a press |
| 摇 yáo | 摇了几下 | shook it a few times |
| 踢 tī | 踢了一下 | gave it a kick |
| 点头 diǎn tóu | 点了一下头 | gave a nod |
他敲了三下门,没人应。
tā qiāo le sān xià mén, méi rén yìng
He knocked on the door three times, but no one answered. (neutral) — 三下 counts three distinct knocks.
她轻轻拍了两下我的肩膀。
tā qīngqīng pāi le liǎng xià wǒ de jiānbǎng
She gave my shoulder two light pats. (neutral) — 两下, two separate pats.
开机前先按一下这个键。
kāijī qián xiān àn yíxià zhège jiàn
Press this button once before switching it on. (neutral) — 按一下, a single press; here the count and the 'brief action' senses overlap.
Notice how 按一下 sits right on the seam between the two uses: it's both "press once" and "give it a quick press." That overlap is why the same word does both jobs — a single light stroke of an action and "just do it briefly" are the same idea.
Common Mistakes
1. Reading 一下 as "one time" and saying 一次 for "a moment." For "wait a moment," you want the softener 一下, not the counter 一次.
❌ 你等一次。
Incorrect — this counts occasions, not 'a moment.' For 'wait a sec' use 等一下.
✅ 你等一下。
nǐ děng yíxià
Wait a moment. — 一下 as the brevity softener.
2. Dropping the softener and sounding curt. Bare imperatives can feel like orders; 一下 (or reduplication) makes them polite.
❌ 帮我拿那个包。
Blunt — sounds like a command. Soften it: 帮我拿一下那个包 or 帮我拿拿.
✅ 帮我拿一下那个包。
bāng wǒ ná yíxià nàge bāo
Grab that bag for me. — 一下 turns an order into a light request.
3. Doubling up softeners — 一下 plus reduplication. Pick one; they don't stack.
❌ 让我看看一下。
Incorrect — don't combine reduplication and 一下. Use 看看 or 看一下, not both.
✅ 让我看一下。
ràng wǒ kàn yíxià
Let me take a look. — one softener is enough.
4. Putting a pronoun object after 一下. With a pronoun, the pronoun comes first.
❌ 等一下我。
Incorrect — a pronoun object precedes 一下: 等我一下.
✅ 等我一下。
děng wǒ yíxià
Wait for me a sec. — pronoun 我, then 一下.
Key Takeaways
- 一下 (yíxià) is the everyday softener: it turns a blunt verb into a light, polite request — 等一下, 看一下, 试一下, 帮我拿一下.
- It manages tone, not counting — don't read it as "one time"; for "a moment" it's 一下, not 一次.
- 一下 overlaps with verb reduplication (看一下 ≈ 看看); both make an action brief and low-pressure.
- With a real number, 下 counts short physical motions: 敲了三下, 拍了两下, 摇了几下. Use 两下, not 二下.
- With a pronoun object, the pronoun comes first: 等我一下, never 等一下我.

- Verbal Measure Words OverviewHSK 2 — Just as nouns take measure words, verbs take them to count how many times an action happens — 看了三次, 说一遍, 去一趟. These 动量词 sit after the verb, before a full noun object but after a pronoun object.
- Softeners: …一下 and …一点儿HSK 2 — Two little tails shrink a request so it feels like a small favor: …一下 (yíxià) after a verb ('just / real quick' — 看一下, 等一下) and …一点儿 (yìdiǎnr) after an adjective ('a bit' — 便宜一点儿, 小声一点儿). Both make an ask sound smaller, and therefore easier to grant.
- Verb Reduplication: The Tentative/Brief SenseHSK 2 — Doubling a verb — 看看 (kànkan), 试试 (shìshi), 尝尝 (chángchang) — softens it to 'have a quick look / give it a try / do a bit of'. It's a built-in politeness device, not a repeated action, and the second syllable drops to neutral tone.
- 次 (Times / Occurrences)HSK 1 — 次 (cì) is the default verbal measure for counting occurrences of an action — 去过两次, 再说一次, 第一次, 这次. It simply tallies events, with no sense of completeness or direction.
