Questions & Answers about Dün akşam büyük bir kavga çıktı.
Why is çıktı used here instead of a verb like başladı (started)?
While başladı simply means started, the verb çıkmak (literally to exit or to go out) is naturally used in Turkish to describe sudden, disruptive, or spontaneous events breaking out. You will commonly see it used with nouns like kavga (fight), yangın (fire), or fırtına (storm).
The English translation says last night, but the Turkish uses dün akşam. Can I say dün gece instead?
Yes, but there is a slight difference in timing. Dün akşam refers to the evening hours before bedtime, which is when most social incidents happen. Dün gece specifically means the late night or overnight hours. If the fight broke out at 3 AM, you would naturally use dün gece.
Does the placement of bir matter in büyük bir kavga?
Yes, this is a strict word order rule to remember. When an adjective modifies a noun that has the indefinite article bir, the adjective must come first. Saying bir büyük kavga sounds unnatural to native speakers unless you are specifically emphasizing the number one.
