Breakdown of Hava bunaltıcı olur diye hijyeni asla ihmal etmemeliyiz.

Questions & Answers about Hava bunaltıcı olur diye hijyeni asla ihmal etmemeliyiz.

How does olur diye give us the meaning of 'in case'?

The word diye literally means 'saying' or 'thinking.' When combined with the aorist tense in olur (gets or happens), the phrase olur diye acts as a precautionary clause. It literally means 'thinking it might get,' which we translate naturally as 'in case it gets.'

Could we use the future tense olacak diye instead of the aorist olur diye here?

You could, but it changes the meaning. Using the future tense olacak diye implies certainty, meaning 'because it will get sweltering.' Using the aorist olur diye shows it is just a possibility you are preparing for, meaning 'in case it gets sweltering.'

What is the root of the word bunaltıcı?

It comes from the verb bunalmak, which means to feel suffocated or overwhelmed. The suffix -t makes it causative (bunaltmak - to overwhelm), and -ıcı turns it into an adjective. So bunaltıcı describes weather that makes you feel suffocated by the heat.

Why does hijyeni have the accusative -i ending?

It is the direct object of the compound verb ihmal etmek (to neglect). Even though hygiene is an abstract concept, Turkish treats it as a definite noun here, so it takes the accusative case to show exactly what we must not neglect.
