Taking Precautions with "diye"
When packing for an outdoor trip, you often bring items "just in case." In Turkish, you express this by pairing a verb with diye.
To say "in case [something] happens," conjugate the verb in the Aorist (Simple Present) tense and follow it with diye. While diye often means "because" or "saying that," here it implies you are taking a precaution because you anticipate a possibility.
| I took a big thermos with us in case we get thirsty. | Susarız diye yanımıza büyük bir termos aldım. |
| I added this small pocket knife to the bag too, in case the tent's rope breaks. | Çadırın ipi kopar diye bu küçük çakıyı da çantaya ekledim. |
Adding the Conditional
You can also use the Aorist Conditional (usually ending in -rsa or -rse) followed by diye. This translates to "in case it gets..." or "if it happens to...". It is especially common with the verb olmak (to be / to become) to anticipate changing conditions.
| I put earplugs in the bag in case it gets very noisy at night. | Gece çok gürültülü olursa diye çantaya kulak tıkacı koydum. |
You can easily mix and match both the Aorist and Conditional structures in the same sentence to cover all your bases.
| I packed water in case we get thirsty, and a pocket knife in case it's needed. | Susarız diye su, lazım olursa diye de çakı koydum. |
Being Prepared
When talking about precautions, you will frequently express relief that you planned ahead using phrases like iyi ki (good thing / fortunately).
| prepared (with provisions) | tedarikli |
| Good thing we came prepared in case it rains. | İyi ki yağmur yağar diye tedarikli geldik. |
You can also use these precautionary clauses to give advice or state rules about what must be done to avoid trouble, pairing them with the obligation suffix -malı / -meli (must / should).
| You must not leave the thermos at home in case you get cold at night. | Gece üşürsün diye termosu evde bırakmamalısın. |
| We must not forget to take tissues with us in case something spills on us. | Üzerimize bir şey dökülür diye yanımıza peçete almayı unutmamalıyız. |
