Questions & Answers about Sıcaklık eksi kırka düşecek diye kalın kıyafetler alıyoruz.
How does düşecek diye translate to 'in case it drops'?
The word diye literally comes from the verb demek (to say). However, it is frequently used to show a reason, intention, or worry, roughly translating to 'thinking that' or 'because'. Combined with the future tense düşecek, the phrase düşecek diye means 'thinking that it will drop' or 'in case it drops'.
Why is the dative case (-a) attached to the number kırk in kırka?
The verb düşmek (to fall or drop) requires the dative case to indicate the destination or the level something falls to. Therefore, 'dropping to forty' is constructed as kırka düşmek.
I learned about consonant mutation (k changing to ğ). Why does kırk stay as kırka instead of becoming 'kırğa'?
Consonant mutation (where k softens to ğ between vowels) generally does not apply to single-syllable words in Turkish. Since kırk has only one syllable, the k remains hard when the vowel suffix -a is added.
Could alıyoruz also mean 'we are buying' in this sentence?
Absolutely. The verb almak commonly means both 'to take' (such as packing items for a trip) and 'to buy'. Without additional context, this sentence could perfectly well mean 'We are buying thick clothes in case the temperature drops.'
