Precaution clauses (-acak diye)

Actions Taken as Precautions

In the previous lesson, you used the -(y)AcAk diye structure to express fear or worry about a future event. You can also use this exact same structure with action verbs to explain why you are taking a precaution.

When paired with an action taken to prepare for or prevent an unwanted event, diye translates to "in case" or "for fear that."

We prepared the thermal tents in case a blizzard breaks out.
Tipi çıkacak diye termal çadırları hazırladık.
I bought a thermal sleeping bag in case the frost starts.
Ayaz başlayacak diye termal bir uyku tulumu satın aldım.
We put a flare in the tent in case someone gets lost.
Biri kaybolacak diye çadıra fişek koyduk.

Conjugating the Feared Event

The feared event doesn't always happen to a third party or an object. If you are afraid of something happening to yourself or someone else, conjugate the future tense verb for that specific person before adding diye.

We are constantly drinking hot tea for fear that we will get cold in the frost.
Ayazda üşüyeceğiz diye sürekli sıcak çay içiyoruz.
I am walking slowly for fear that I will slip on the slippery ice.
Kaygan buzda kayacağım diye yavaş yürüyorum.
I prepared hot soup for fear that they will get hypothermia.
Hipotermi geçirecekler diye sıcak çorba hazırladım.

Describing Extreme Conditions

While on your expedition, you will encounter intense weather and terrain. To emphasize an adjective in Turkish (meaning "extremely" or "very, very"), simply repeat the adjective with the question particle ( / mi / mu / ) between them.

You will often see these intense descriptions paired with "if" statements (-sA / -sE or their negative forms -mAzsA / -mEzsE) to warn about the consequences of the extreme conditions.

The blizzard is extremely cold, if the heater doesn't work we will freeze.
Tipi soğuk mu soğuk, ısıtıcı çalışmazsa donarız.
The crevasse is very deep, but we can jump over it.
Çatlak derin mi derin, ama üstünden atlayabiliriz.
The slippery slope is very steep, if you aren't careful you will fall.
Kaygan yamaç dik mi dik, dikkat etmezsen düşersin.
