Questions & Answers about Ekonomiyi güçlendirmek amacıyla yeni fabrikalar açılınca işsizlik azaldı.
Why do we use the infinitive güçlendirmek before amacıyla here instead of a verbal noun?
The phrase amacıyla means 'with the aim of'. We use the standard infinitive -mAk here because the implied subject of the strengthening (the government or authorities) is the same as the implied subject of the opening of the factories. If the subjects were different, we would have to use a verbal noun like -mAsI.
Could we just use için instead of amacıyla?
Yes, Ekonomiyi güçlendirmek için is grammatically correct and means 'in order to strengthen the economy'. However, amacıyla (with the aim of) and maksadıyla (for the purpose of) are more formal. They are the preferred choices for professional, economic, or official contexts like this one.
What is happening grammatically in the word açılınca?
This combines the passive voice and a time suffix. The root is açmak (to open). We add the passive suffix -ıl to make açılmak (to be opened) because the factories are not opening themselves. Then we add the time suffix -ınca (when), resulting in 'when [they] were opened'.
Why does ekonomi take the accusative case (ekonomiyi) when it comes before an infinitive rather than a regular conjugated verb?
Infinitives in Turkish still act like verbs internally and can take direct objects. Because 'the economy' is a specific, definite thing being strengthened, it requires the accusative case suffix -(y)i just as it would if it were the object of a main verb.
