Questions & Answers about Görüyoruz ki balinalar derin suda yüzmeyi ve plankton süzmeyi öğreniyor.
How does Görüyoruz ki... öğreniyor differ from the native Turkish way of forming this sentence?
In standard Turkish grammar, you would embed the clause using a verbal noun with the -dIk suffix: Balinaların ... öğrendiğini görüyoruz (literally, "We see their learning"). Using ki acts just like the English word "that", letting you link a main verb to a complete, standalone sentence. This structure is extremely common in daily speech, especially for long or complex statements that would be awkward to nest with suffixes.
Why does the plural subject balinalar take the singular verb öğreniyor instead of öğreniyorlar?
In Turkish, when a plural subject is non-human (like animals, plants, objects, or concepts), the verb is almost always conjugated in the singular form. While öğreniyorlar wouldn't be completely wrong since animals are living things, öğreniyor is the grammatically standard and most natural choice here.
Why do the words for swimming and filtering (yüzmeyi and süzmeyi) take the accusative case?
These words are the direct objects of the verb öğreniyor (is learning). The verb öğrenmek requires its specific direct object to be in the accusative case. The actions are turned into verbal nouns using the -me suffix (yüzme, süzme), and then the accusative suffix -i (with a buffer -y-) is added to connect them to the verb.
