Questions & Answers about Toplantıda ansızın hıçkıracağım ve kıkırdayacağım tuttu.
Why does the sentence use the future suffix -AcAK to talk about an urge that happened in the past?
In the structure -(y)AcAğI tutmak (to have a sudden urge), the -AcAK suffix isn't acting as a standard future tense. Instead, it creates a verbal noun that represents the impending action. You are literally saying 'My impending hiccuping and giggling took hold.' Because the event happened at the meeting, the main verb tutmak is in the past tense (tuttu).
Why is the main verb tuttu in the third person instead of the first person (tuttum)?
In this idiom, the grammatical subject of the sentence isn't 'I'. The subjects are the actions themselves: hıçkıracağım (my hiccuping) and kıkırdayacağım (my giggling). These urges 'took hold' (tuttu) of the speaker. The fact that it happened to 'me' is expressed entirely through the first-person possessive suffix -ım on the verbal nouns.
Could we just attach the suffix to the final verb and say hıçkır ve kıkırdayacağım tuttu?
No, in this specific structure, both verbs usually need the full conjugation to sound natural, especially because they are being treated as parallel noun phrases. You must form the full verbal noun for both: hıçkıracağım and kıkırdayacağım.
Let's review the spelling: how exactly do we build kıkırdayacağım from the root kıkırda-?
