Sudden Urges (-eceği tutmak)
Have you ever had a sudden, unexplainable craving for a specific food, or the urge to do something completely random? Turkish uses an expressive compound verb to describe these unexpected impulses, literally translating to: "someone's future-doing took hold."
Verb Root + -(y)AcAğ- + Possessive + tutmak
To build this structure:
- Take the future participle
-(y)acakor-(y)ecek. - Because you are adding a possessive suffix that starts with a vowel, the
kalways softens toğ(-(y)acağ-or-(y)eceğ-). - Add the possessive suffix matching whoever has the urge (e.g.,
-ım/-imfor "my",-ı/-ifor "his/her/its"). - Follow it with the verb
tutmak(to hold/catch), usually in the past tense (tuttu).
For example, with içmek (to drink):
içecek➔içeceğimtuttu➔ içeceğim tuttu (I had a sudden urge to drink)
içecek➔içeceğituttu➔ içeceği tuttu (He/she had a sudden urge to drink)
(Note: For the verb yemek (to eat), the root vowel narrows: ye ➔ yiyeceğim tuttu).
Food Cravings
This grammar is frequently paired with adverbs that emphasize the spontaneity of the urge, like ansızın (all of a sudden) or durup dururken (out of nowhere).
| out of nowhere / unprovoked | durup dururken |
| The girl had a sudden urge to eat baklava out of nowhere. | Kızın durup dururken baklava yiyeceği tuttu. |
| Late at night, I had a sudden urge to eat manti! | Gece gece mantı yiyeceğim tuttu! |
Spontaneous and Inconvenient Actions
Beyond food, use this structure for any sudden behavioral impulse. It often carries a slight tone of amusement or annoyance, especially when someone does something at an inconvenient time.
| The child had a sudden urge to whine in the supermarket. | Çocuğun markette mızmızlanacağı tuttu. |
| The quiet girl in the class had a sudden urge to giggle. | Sınıftaki sessiz kızın kıkırdayacağı tuttu. |
When describing multiple sudden urges at once, apply the -(y)AcAğ- + possessive structure to each verb, placing tuttu at the very end of the sentence.
| Suddenly in the meeting, I had an urge to hiccup and giggle. | Toplantıda ansızın hıçkıracağım ve kıkırdayacağım tuttu. |
| Out of nowhere at the wedding, I had an urge to dance the halay. | Düğünde durup dururken halay çekeceğim tuttu. |
