Questions & Answers about Salgın yüzünden spora tutkun gençler evde kalıyor.
How does the suffix -gın create the word salgın here?
The word salgın (epidemic) comes from the verb salmak, which means to release, let out, or unleash. The suffix -gın (which can also be -kın, -gun, or -kün) attaches to a verb to create a noun or adjective that embodies the result of that action. So, an illness that has been "unleashed" or spread widely becomes a salgın.
What verb does tutkun come from, and why does the suffix start with a 'k' instead of a 'g'?
It comes from tutmak (to hold, catch, or keep). Because the root ends in the voiceless consonant t, the suffix -gun undergoes consonant assimilation to match it, becoming -kun. Conceptually, a person who is tutkun is "held" or "captivated" by something, which translates to being passionate about or devoted to it.
Why does the word for sports take the dative case in spora tutkun?
In Turkish, adjectives often demand that the noun they relate to takes a specific case. While in English you are passionate "about" something, in Turkish you are passionate "to" it. The adjective tutkun requires the preceding noun to take the dative case (-a or -e), which is why spor becomes spora.
We previously learned that yüzünden (due to / because of) usually follows a genitive noun. Why is it just salgın yüzünden and not salgının yüzünden?
