Why is the dative suffix -a instead of -ya or -e in kenara?
The root word is kenar, meaning 'edge' or 'side'. To say 'to the side', we add the dative suffix. Because kenar ends in a consonant (r), we do not need the buffer letter -y-. Because the last vowel is 'a', we follow A-type vowel harmony and add -a, making it kenara.
Why does the verb gelmek (to come) look different in the two halves of the sentence (gel vs geliyor)?
They are doing two different grammatical jobs! Gel is a command (the imperative form). You use the bare root of the verb to tell someone directly to do something: 'Come!'. Geliyor, on the other hand, uses the present continuous suffix -iyor to describe an ongoing action happening right now: 'is coming'.
The English translation says 'a car', but why isn't the word bir (a/an) used before araba?
In Turkish, when giving a general statement or warning like 'car is coming' or 'dog is barking', it is very common to leave out the word bir. The focus is on the type of object causing the action rather than the exact number. You could say bir araba geliyor, but leaving it out is completely natural.
