Questions & Answers about Buz yoktu ama kayıverdim!
How is the word kayıverdim built?
It starts with the verb root kay (from kaymak, to slip). Then we add the suddenness suffix -ıver, making it 'suddenly slip'. Finally, we add the standard past tense -di and the first-person ending -m ('I').
Why doesn't the -ver part of kayıverdim follow vowel harmony?
The suffix -(y)Iver comes from the actual verb vermek (to give). Because it is originally a separate word, the -ver part is frozen and never changes to match the vowels of the root verb. Only the connecting vowel before it (the ı in this case) follows 4-way vowel harmony.
What is the difference between saying kaydım and kayıverdim?
kaydım just states the fact: 'I slipped'. By adding the -(y)Iver suffix to make kayıverdim, you emphasize that the action happened very quickly, unexpectedly, or out of nowhere.
I remember yok means 'there is not', but why is the past tense ending -tu instead of -du in yoktu?
This is due to consonant harmony. Because yok ends in the voiceless consonant k, the past tense suffix -du must change its soft d to a hard t, resulting in -tu.
