Questions & Answers about Yoksa etekler için yeni bir kalıp çizdirilirdi.
How do we break down all the suffixes in the verb çizdirilirdi?
Let's take it step by step from the root çiz- (to draw). First is the causative suffix -dir (to have someone draw). Next is the passive suffix -il (to be ordered/caused to be drawn). Finally, we have the aorist suffix -ir followed by the past tense suffix -di. Together, this aorist + past combination (-irdi) forms the conditional main clause meaning "would", giving us "would be ordered to be drawn."
There is no "if" clause here. Why are we using the aorist past (-irdi) for a conditional result?
The word yoksa (otherwise) implies the condition. It acts as a shortcut for "If that weren't the case..." based on whatever was said before this sentence. The aorist past is then used for the main clause to describe the hypothetical result, exactly like using "would" in English.
Why use the causative-passive çizdirilirdi instead of just the passive çizilirdi?
If the sentence used the simple passive çizilirdi, it would merely mean "a new pattern would be drawn." By inserting the causative suffix -dir, the sentence emphasizes that someone in charge is commissioning the work. It changes the meaning to "a new pattern would be ordered to be drawn."
Could we change the word order and say "Yoksa yeni bir kalıp etekler için çizdirilirdi"?
