Breakdown of Başlangıçta film çok sıkıcı görünüyor. Bununla birlikte, hikâye harika.

Questions & Answers about Başlangıçta film çok sıkıcı görünüyor. Bununla birlikte, hikâye harika.

How does bununla birlikte translate to 'nevertheless'?

Literally, bununla birlikte means 'together with this' (bunun = of this, -la = with, birlik = unity, -te = in). In Turkish, it is used as a contrastive conjunction meaning 'nevertheless,' 'however,' or 'that said.' It connects two opposing ideas, showing that despite the boring start, the story is actually great.

Why use görünüyor here instead of görüyor?

Görüyor comes from görmek and means '(it) sees.' In this sentence, the film isn't looking at anything! By adding the suffix -ün, we get görünmek, which means 'to seem' or 'to appear.' So, film çok sıkıcı görünüyor translates to 'the film seems very boring.'

In başlangıçta, why use the basic locative suffix -ta instead of saying 'filmin başlangıcında'?

Both are correct, but they feel slightly different. Başlangıçta is a standalone adverb meaning 'initially' or 'at the beginning.' If you wanted to specifically say 'at the beginning of the film,' you would build the noun compound filmin başlangıcında. Using başlangıçta is just a very natural, concise way to set the scene.

Why does hikâye have a little hat over the 'a'?
