Questions & Answers about Çocuk bile kitap okuyor.
Why is bile placed after çocuk?
In Turkish, the word bile (meaning "even") comes immediately after the word it emphasizes. Because we want to say "even the child", we put bile right after çocuk.
The English translation says "books", but kitap is singular. Shouldn't it be kitaplar?
When talking about a general action without referring to specific items, Turkish uses the singular form for the object. Because the child is just doing the general action of book-reading, we use kitap. If we used kitapları, it would mean specific books.
The verb okuyor uses the -iyor ending for things happening right now. Why does the translation say "reads" instead of "is reading"?
It is true that the -iyor ending forms the present continuous tense ("is reading"). However, in everyday Turkish, this tense is very often used to talk about general habits and ongoing facts, much like the simple present tense ("reads") in English. Depending on the context, this sentence could also mean "Even the child is reading a book (right now)."
