Questions & Answers about Belgeyi koymak için bir zarf arıyorum.
How does koymak için create the meaning "to put" here?
The word için normally means "for". When you put it right after an infinitive verb (a verb in its dictionary form ending in -mak or -mek, like koymak), it creates a purpose clause meaning "in order to". So, koymak için literally translates to "in order to put".
Why does belge have the -(y)i ending, but zarf doesn't get an ending?
This shows the difference between specific and non-specific objects. You are putting a specific document inside, so belge (document) takes the specific accusative ending to become belgeyi. However, you are looking for any envelope, so bir zarf remains in its plain, non-specific form.
The dictionary form of "to look for" is aramak. Why is the verb conjugated as arıyorum and not arayıyorum?
When a verb root ends in a wide vowel like -a or -e (here, the root is ara-), and you add the present continuous suffix -ıyor, that final vowel drops or changes to match vowel harmony. Therefore, ara- plus -ıyorum squishes down into arıyorum.
Why isn't there a word for "in" or "into" in the Turkish sentence?
English grammar requires "in" at the end of "an envelope to put the document in." Turkish structures the whole idea differently: "In order to put the document, I am looking for an envelope." The destination is implied by the context of the verbs, so no extra preposition is needed.
