Questions & Answers about Yeni yazılım her cihazı yönetir.
Why does the verb yönetmek take the -ir suffix here?
The verb root is yönet- (to manage). For verbs with more than one syllable that end in a consonant, the aorist (simple present) suffix uses 4-way vowel harmony. Since the last vowel in yönet- is e, it takes -ir, giving us yönetir.
Why is there an -ı on the end of cihazı?
That is the accusative case suffix. The phrase her cihaz (every device) is the direct object receiving the action of the verb. Because the word her defines exactly which devices we are talking about, the object is considered specific in Turkish and needs the accusative ending.
Why isn't the plural suffix used on cihazı since the phrase means every device?
In Turkish, the word her (every) must always be followed by a singular noun. You will never add the plural -lar or -ler to a noun immediately after her.
I know yazmak means to write. Is yazılım related to it?
Exactly! Yazılım (software) comes from the verb yazmak (to write). Think of it as the written code that makes a device work.
