Dışarıda maske takmak gerek.

Questions & Answers about Dışarıda maske takmak gerek.

How does gerek work here with takmak?
Gerek means "necessary." When you put it right after the dictionary form of a verb (the infinitive with -mak or -mek), it creates a general rule or advice. Takmak gerek literally means "to wear is necessary." Because there are no personal endings, it means "one must wear" or "it is necessary to wear" for everyone in general.
Why use takmak for wearing a mask? Shouldn't it be giymek?
In Turkish, giymek is only used for core clothing items like shirts, pants, dresses, or shoes. For accessories and things you "attach" to your body—like glasses, hats, jewelry, seatbelts, and a maske (mask)—you must use the verb takmak.
Why is it dışarıda instead of just dışarı?
Dışarı on its own usually acts as a direction, like when you say "Go outside." However, because the action of wearing the mask happens in that location, we add the locative suffix -da (in/on/at). Dışarıda means "located outside" or "outdoors."
Why is it just maske and not maskeyi?
We leave maske in its plain form because we are talking about wearing a mask in general. If you wanted to say "It is necessary to wear the mask" (a specific mask we already talked about), you would add the accusative ending to make it maskeyi.
