Questions & Answers about Öğrenmek için çok okuyorlar.
I thought için meant 'for'. Why does the translation say 'to learn'?
While için translates to 'for' when used with nouns, when it follows a verb in its dictionary form (ending in -mak or -mek), it means 'in order to'. So öğrenmek için literally means 'in order to learn'.
Why do we use the full dictionary form öğrenmek before için? Can I just use the root öğren?
You must use the full infinitive form. In Turkish, to express 'in order to do an action', the rule is to use the verb with its -mak or -mek ending right before için. Saying öğren için is grammatically incorrect.
Why is çok placed right before the verb instead of after it?
In Turkish, adverbs that describe how or how much an action is done usually go immediately before the verb. Since çok (a lot) describes the reading action, it naturally sits right next to okuyorlar.
Why isn't the word for 'they' (onlar) at the beginning of the sentence?
Turkish often drops subject pronouns because the verb ending already tells us who is acting. The -lar suffix at the end of okuyorlar clearly shows the subject is 'they'. You could add onlar at the start, but it is not necessary.
