Questions & Answers about Otel temiz ve ucuz mu?
Does the word ve work just like "and" in English?
Yes! Just like in English, ve connects two words of the same type. Here, it simply links the two adjectives temiz (clean) and ucuz (cheap) together into a single descriptive phrase.
Why is the question word mu at the very end of the sentence?
In Turkish, the question particle comes right after the specific thing you are asking about. By placing mu at the end, after the combined phrase temiz ve ucuz, it applies to both adjectives. You are asking if the hotel is both of those things.
Why is the question particle spelled mu here instead of mi?
It changes based on 4-way vowel harmony! The question particle always matches the last vowel of the word right before it. The word before it is ucuz, which ends with the vowel 'u'. According to the harmony rules, an 'u' is always followed by mu.
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
There isn't a separate word for "is" in Turkish. When talking about a third-party subject like "he", "she", or "it" (in this case, otel), the "is" is simply understood from the context. Adding the question particle mu turns the hidden statement "the hotel is..." into "is the hotel...?".
