You can actually say ağustosta (in August). However, it is very common in Turkish to pair the month's name with the word ay (month). Together they form the group ağustos ayı (the month of August). Adding the location suffix makes it ağustos ayında (in the month of August).

How is the word ayında built, and why is there an -n-?

It starts with ay (month). To link it to August, it takes the suffix -ı, becoming ağustos ayı. When we want to add a spatial suffix like -da (in/at) to a word that already has this linking suffix, Turkish requires the buffer letter -n- in between. So it breaks down as ay + ı + n + da.

Why does hiç mean 'at all' here rather than 'never'?

The word hiç adds strong emphasis to negative statements. Depending on the context, it can translate to 'never' or 'not at all'. Because the verb çalışmıyoruz means 'we are not working' or 'we do not work', adding hiç emphasizes that zero work is being done during that specific time, making 'not at all' the most natural English translation here.
