Questions & Answers about Köşede taksi beklemeyin.
The current lesson is about the affirmative '-in' ending. How do we make this negative command?
To tell a group of people (or someone you are speaking to formally) NOT to do something, you add the negative suffix -me or -ma right after the verb root. Here we have the root bekle (wait) plus -me (negative). Then we add the plural/formal ending -in.
Why is there a -y- in the middle of beklemeyin?
When the negative suffix -me (which ends in a vowel) meets the imperative suffix -in (which starts with a vowel), Turkish requires a buffer letter so it flows nicely. The letter -y- is inserted to prevent two vowels from clashing.
Why don't we use a word for 'for' when saying 'wait for a taxi'?
The Turkish verb beklemek already means 'to wait for'. You don't need a separate word here; you just state the thing you are waiting for right before the verb.
Why is it just taksi instead of taksiyi?
Because the instruction is about waiting for any taxi, not a specific one, we don't use the specific direct object suffix (the accusative case). General, non-specific objects in Turkish usually sit right before the verb in their plain, dictionary form.
