Perspectives (göre)

Expressing Opinions with göre

The postposition göre expresses opinions or perspectives, translating to "according to" or "in [someone's] opinion".

It requires the preceding noun or pronoun to be in the dative case (-(y)e / -(y)a). If the word has a possessive ending, the dative suffix follows it. Note that the pronouns ben (I) and sen (you) irregularly become bana and sana.

To me, this movie is very weird.
Bana göre bu film çok tuhaf.
According to my own view, this is not a problem.
Kendi görüşüme göre bu bir problem değil.

Cultural and Social Perspectives

When talking about societal norms or traditions, simply attach the dative ending to the noun. Remember that nouns ending in k usually soften to ğ before a vowel (for example, gelenek becomes geleneğe).

According to our culture, this is very normal.
Bizim kültürümüze göre bu çok normal.
According to this tradition, everyone wears a yellow shirt.
Bu geleneğe göre herkes sarı gömlek giyiyor.
According to old beliefs, cats are lucky.
Eski inançlara göre kediler şanslı.

Making Comparisons

göre can also mean "compared to" when contrasting two things.

Compared to their culture, this tradition is a little weird.
Onların kültürüne göre bu gelenek biraz tuhaf.

You can also use this structure to contrast societal rules or values with personal views.

According to society, you are not normal.
Topluma göre sen normal değilsin.
To me, the greatest value is family.
Bana göre en büyük değer aile.
