Past Unfulfilled Obligation: -malıydı
To express that an action should have happened in the past but did not, combine the obligation suffix (-malı / -meli) with the past tense auxiliary suffix (-ydı / -ydi).
Because of vowel harmony, you will use -malıydı for verbs containing back vowels (a, ı, o, u) and -meliydi for verbs containing front vowels (e, i, ö, ü).

Asking Questions
When asking for hindsight opinions using question words like kim (who) or ne zaman (when), the sentence structure remains standard and the verb takes the usual -malıydı / -meliydi suffix.

Negative Past Obligation: -mamalıydı
To state that something should not have happened, insert the negative suffix (-ma / -me) directly after the verb stem, before the obligation suffix. This creates the endings -mamalıydı or -memeliydi.
