How do we get "has never played" from ไม่เคยเล่น?
In English we say "play in the snow." Why is there no word for "in" or "the" here?
Thai often leaves out prepositions (like "in" or "with") when the relationship between the action and the object is obvious. You just put the action เล่น (to play) directly next to the object หิมะ (snow). Also, Thai doesn't use articles like "a" or "the" at all!
Why isn't the word เขา (he) repeated after แต่ (but)?
In Thai, if the subject of the second half of the sentence is exactly the same as the first half, it is almost always dropped to sound more natural. Since we already established we are talking about เขา (he), we can jump straight to จะไป (will go).
The sentence is about "him", so why does it end with the male polite word ครับ?
Polite particles like ครับ match the gender of the speaker, not the person being talked about. This sentence is being spoken by a man, even though he is talking about a third person ("he").
