Why do we use ไม่ใช่ for "is not" instead of ไม่เป็น?
We use ไม่ใช่ for "is not", but then we use เป็น for "is a Thai person". Why don't we use ใช่ instead of เป็น?
This is a very common trap! While the negative is ไม่ใช่, the positive "to be" (when linking two nouns, like "is a Thai person") is เป็น. The word ใช่ on its own usually means "Yes" or "That's right", so we don't use it as the main verb "to be" in positive sentences.
Does ฝรั่ง just mean any foreigner from any country?
Not exactly. ฝรั่ง specifically refers to Westerners or Caucasians. If the person were from Japan or China, a Thai person would not usually call them a ฝรั่ง. However, because there are many Western tourists in Thailand, you will hear this word constantly.
Why is it คนไทย instead of ไทยคน?
As a quick refresher: in Thai, describing words (adjectives) always come after the noun they describe. Here, ไทย (Thai) describes คน (person), so it must be written as คนไทย (person Thai).
