Why does the sentence use ไม่ใช่ for "is not", but uses เป็น for "is"?
In Thai, when you state what someone is (like their nationality), you use เป็น (to be). However, when you want to say what someone is not, you cannot use "ไม่เป็น". The rule is to use ไม่ใช่ to negate a noun. So, we use ไม่ใช่ for the negative part and เป็น for the positive part!
Why does the sentence say คน อเมริกา instead of just the country name?
To express a nationality in Thai, you put the word คน (person) right in front of the country name. So คน อเมริกา literally means "America person" (American) and คน อังกฤษ means "England person" (English).
In English we say "but he is English", but the Thai sentence doesn't repeat เขา (he) after แต่ (but). Why?
Thai frequently drops pronouns when it is already clear from context who you are talking about. Since the sentence started with เขา (he), we don't need to repeat it after แต่ (but) because it is obvious we are still talking about the same person.
