The Transformative เป็น ("Into")
In corporate environments, you often need to adjust (ปรับ) your approach or formulate a new strategy (กลยุทธ์).
| We just adjusted the strategy. | เรา เพิ่ง ปรับ กลยุทธ์ ครับ |
When these modifications result in a distinctly new state or format, you will use เป็น. While you likely know เป็น as the verb "to be," it also acts as a resultative complement meaning "into."
Place it after verbs of organization or modification to show the resulting state. The common structure is:
- [Verb] + [Object] + เป็น + [New State/Category]
For example, if you organize data, use เป็น to show what categories (หมวดหมู่) it was organized into.
| She organized that data into new categories. | เขา จัด ข้อมูล เหล่านั้น เป็น หมวดหมู่ ใหม่ ค่ะ |
Dividing and Consolidating
This grammar shines when breaking down large projects or merging departments.
To say you are splitting a task, use แบ่ง (to divide) paired with เป็น to express "to divide into" specific phases (ระยะ).
| The manager divided the project into three phases. | ผู้จัดการ แบ่ง โครงการ เป็น สาม ระยะ ครับ |
Conversely, if you are closing branches to merge teams, you can stack verbs to show a complex transformation: ยุบ (to dissolve) + รวม (to combine) + เป็น (into).
| The company dissolved two departments, combining them into a single team. | บริษัท ยุบ สอง แผนก รวม เป็น ทีม เดียว ครับ |
Restructuring and Translating
You can apply this same transformative structure to sweeping organizational changes, such as adjusting an entire team's structure into a new format.
| The team just adjusted the structure into a new format. | ทีม เพิ่ง ปรับ โครงสร้าง เป็น รูปแบบ ใหม่ ค่ะ |
The transformative เป็น is also exactly how you express converting documents from one language to another. When you reach a conclusion (ข้อสรุป) and need to share it internationally, use the verb แปล (to translate) followed by เป็น to mean "translate into."
| Please translate this conclusion into English. | กรุณา แปล ข้อสรุป นี้ เป็น ภาษา อังกฤษ ค่ะ |
