The Relational Preposition ต่อ
To indicate the target or recipient of an effect, action, or attitude, Thai uses the preposition ต่อ. Depending on the context, it translates to "towards," "on," "against," or "to."
| towards / on (target of an effect) | ต่อ |
In business and economics, you will frequently see this word used to explain how one thing impacts another.
Impacts and Effects
When discussing the impact of a policy or event, use the noun ผลกระทบ (impact / effect). To say something "has an impact on" a target, use the phrase มี ผลกระทบ ต่อ followed by the target.
| This policy has an impact on the economy. | นโยบาย นี้ มี ผลกระทบ ต่อ เศรษฐกิจ ครับ |
Similarly, you can use the verb ส่งผล (to affect) followed directly by ต่อ to show what is being affected by an action or situation.
| Increasing prices affect consumers immediately. | ราคา ที่ แพง ขึ้น ส่งผล ต่อ ผู้บริโภค ทันที ค่ะ |
| Fewer customers affect our sales. | ลูกค้า น้อย ลง ส่งผล ต่อ ยอดขาย ของ เรา ค่ะ |
Good or Bad "For" a Target
When an adjective describes how a situation relates to a specific target—such as being "good for" business or "bad for" a brand's image—place ต่อ right after the adjective.
| The market trend will probably be good for our business. | แนวโน้ม ของ ตลาด คงจะ ดี ต่อ ธุรกิจ เรา ครับ |
| This news is not good for the brand's image. | ข่าว นี้ ไม่ ดี ต่อ ภาพลักษณ์ ของ แบรนด์ ครับ |
Directing Attitudes
You also use ต่อ to connect an attitude or an abstract quality (like trust or credibility) to the group it is directed towards, similar to saying "with" or "towards" in English.
| A transparent company can build credibility with customers. | บริษัท ที่ โปร่งใส จะ สร้าง ความน่าเชื่อถือ ต่อ ลูกค้า ได้ ครับ |
