The Proportional Comparative
To describe how one action or state directly intensifies another, Thai uses the proportional comparative structure ยิ่ง... ยิ่ง... (the more... the more...).
You form this by placing ยิ่ง directly before the verb or stative verb in two parallel clauses. In everyday Thai, it is very common to place ก็ before the second ยิ่ง to smoothly connect the cause and the effect.
| The more challenging it is, the more fun it is. | ยิ่ง ท้าทาย ก็ ยิ่ง สนุก ครับ |
| The more you risk, the more profit there is. | ยิ่ง เสี่ยง มาก กำไร ก็ ยิ่ง เยอะ ค่ะ |
Placing the Subject
When you need to specify who is performing the action, the subject typically goes right after the first ยิ่ง. If the subject changes in the second half of the sentence, place the new subject before ก็.
| The more he does it, the more skilled he becomes. | ยิ่ง เขา ทำ ก็ ยิ่ง ชำนาญ ครับ |
| The more we pay attention, the more profound the relationship becomes. | ยิ่ง เรา ใส่ใจ ความสัมพันธ์ ก็ ยิ่ง ลึกซึ้ง ค่ะ |
Expressing Natural Consequences and Impressions
Because this structure inherently describes cause and effect, it pairs perfectly with words that indicate natural outcomes or personal observations. For instance, you can insert ย่อม (naturally / inevitably) right before the second ยิ่ง to emphasize that the result is bound to happen.
| The more you neglect your friends, the more estranged you naturally become. | ยิ่ง ละเลย เพื่อน ก็ ย่อม ยิ่ง ห่างเหิน ครับ |
You can also frame the entire proportional comparison as an observation by placing ดูเหมือนว่า (it seems that) at the very beginning of the sentence.
| It seems that the more she pays attention to details, the more fluently she works. | ดูเหมือนว่า ยิ่ง เธอ ใส่ใจ รายละเอียด ก็ ยิ่ง ทำงาน คล่อง ค่ะ |
The Concise Form
When the relationship between the two clauses is direct and immediate, you can drop ก็ entirely. This creates a snappy, concise rhythm. You will frequently see this pattern used as a quick modifier directly following a topic noun.
