Evaluating Possibility
To express that a scenario or concept is possible, use the phrase เป็นไปได้. To state that something is impossible, negate it by adding ไม่ inside the phrase, creating เป็นไปไม่ได้.
You can use these phrases at the end of a sentence to evaluate a subject, such as a scientific theory or a sci-fi concept.
Asking Questions and Emphasizing Impossibility
When debating the plausibility of hypothetical scenarios, you can turn เป็นไปได้ into a question by adding the question particle ไหม at the end.
To emphasize that a concept is completely impossible, add the emphasizing particle เลย after เป็นไปไม่ได้.
Expressing "It is possible that..." with ว่า
Instead of evaluating a noun phrase, you can evaluate an entire clause by placing เป็นไปได้ or เป็นไปไม่ได้ before the complementizer ว่า (that). This structure translates to "It is possible/impossible that..."
If you are asking a question, place the question word before ว่า. If you are emphasizing impossibility, place เลย before ว่า.
Discussing Complex Theories
These modal phrases are highly flexible and can be embedded within other clauses. For instance, you can state your reasoning or express opinions about future possibilities, such as artificial intelligence or space exploration.
