To emphasize that something is solitary, unique, or limited to exactly one, Thai uses the modifier เดียว ("only one," "a single," or "alone").
Using เดียว with Classifiers
Instead of using the number one (หนึ่ง), place เดียว after the classifier: Noun + Classifier + เดียว. For people, use the classifier คน.
| He is the only heir of the billionaire. |
| The company needs only one successor. |
You can apply this to any noun and its classifier to emphasize a single quantity, like a single drop (หยด) of water or a solitary survivor.
| The survivor drank the only drop of water that was left. |
| We found only one survivor. |
When discussing an exception (ข้อยกเว้น), use the classifier ข้อ.
| There is only one exception. |
Nouns as Their Own Classifiers
Measurements of time and certain abstract concepts often act as their own classifiers. Attach เดียว directly to these nouns, such as a blink of an eye (พริบตา), a course of action (หนทาง), or a bloodline (สายเลือด).
| It broke in a single blink of an eye. |
| This is the only way.
| We are the only bloodline left. |
The Last One
To express the last of something, use สุดท้าย (last) in the same position: Noun + Classifier + สุดท้าย. If a noun acts as its own classifier, attach สุดท้าย directly to it.
| He will fight until the last drop of blood. |
| The successor will fight until the last breath. |
