Maximum extent (ที่สุดเท่าที่จะ...ได้)

Expressing "As much as possible"

To express pushing an action to its limit or doing something as much as possible, use the pattern [Adverb/Adjective] + ที่สุดเท่าที่จะ + [Verb] + ได้.

  • ที่สุด means "the most"
  • เท่าที่จะ means "as much as (one) will" or "equal to what"
  • ได้ means "can"

Most of the time, the verb used in this frame is simply ทำ (to do), forming ทำได้ (can do). However, you can also directly repeat the specific action verb from the main sentence.

Let's see how this is applied when recovering with a ไม้ค้ำ (crutch) or a เฝือก (cast).

(Notice in the second example, the verb ใส่, meaning "to put on" or "to wear", is repeated inside the grammar frame instead of using ทำ!)

Preventing Complications

When recovering from an injury, it is important to follow physical therapy routines to prevent further complications. You must ensure that a bone is not compressing (กดทับ) a nerve (เส้นประสาท), and that your joints and muscles do not degenerate (เสื่อม).

Rehabilitation Movements

Physical therapy will often require you to perform specific movements, such as flexing (กระดก) or swinging (แกว่ง) a limb. The therapist will instruct you to perform these actions to the maximum extent safely possible.

Whether you use ทำ or repeat the specific movement verb depends on what flows best in the sentence. Here is another example of repeating the action verb (กระดก) to emphasize the effort.
