Formal alternative questions (ว่า... หรือไม่)

In casual spoken Thai, an "or not" question usually ends with หรือเปล่า. In written, professional, or formal contexts, the standard phrase is หรือไม่.

whether or not
หรือไม่

To embed a "whether or not" question inside a sentence—usually after a verb of cognition like know, wonder, or check—use the conjunction ว่า, followed by the clause you are verifying, and end with หรือไม่.

This structure works just as well for abstract concepts, like checking a candidate's suitability or a guarantor's reliability.
