Connecting Thoughts with ว่า
In English, we use "that" to connect a main verb to a secondary clause ("I think that it is raining"). In Thai, use ว่า.
Place ว่า directly after verbs of cognition (thinking) or communication (speaking).
[Subject] + [Verb] + ว่า + [Secondary Clause]
For example, pair it with คิด (to think) to express your thoughts and opinions.
| I think that this book is expensive. | ฉัน คิด ว่า หนังสือ เล่ม นี้ แพง ค่ะ |
| Do you think that the weather is good today? | คุณ คิด ว่า วันนี้ อากาศ ดี ไหม ครับ |
Reporting Speech and Beliefs
Use ว่า to report speech or express convictions by placing it after verbs like บอก (to tell) or เชื่อ (to believe).
| He said that it is the truth. | เขา บอก ว่า มัน เป็น ความจริง ครับ |
| I believe that it is the truth. | ผม เชื่อ ว่า มัน เป็น ความจริง ครับ |
Expressing Hopes, Feelings, and Hearsay
This pattern works consistently for other mental and sensory verbs, including หวัง (to hope), ได้ยิน (to hear), and รู้สึก (to feel).
| I hope that it will not rain tomorrow. | ฉัน หวัง ว่า พรุ่งนี้ ฝน จะ ไม่ ตก ค่ะ |
| I heard that you are sick. | ผม ได้ยิน ว่า คุณ ป่วย ครับ |
| I feel that this room is very hot. | ฉัน รู้สึก ว่า ห้อง นี้ ร้อน มาก ค่ะ |
Making Promises
Finally, use สัญญา (to promise) to make a commitment, such as promising not to โกหก (to lie).
| He promised that he will come tomorrow. | เขา สัญญา ว่า จะ มา พรุ่งนี้ ครับ |
| Do you promise that you will not lie? | คุณ สัญญา ไหม ว่า จะ ไม่ โกหก ครับ |
