Why do we use ว่า after สัญญา?
ว่า acts like the word 'that' in English. Because สัญญา (to promise) is a verb about communicating, we use ว่า to link the verb to the specific action being promised.
Why is the question word ไหม placed in the middle of the sentence instead of at the very end?
In Thai, ไหม comes immediately after the main action you are questioning. Here, you are asking 'Do you promise?', so ไหม goes right after สัญญา (to promise) and before the ว่า (that) clause.
The English translation says 'that you will not lie', but I don't see a second คุณ (you) in the Thai sentence. Why?
Thai often drops pronouns when it is obvious who is being talked about. Since the first part of the sentence already establishes that we are talking to 'you', there is no need to repeat คุณ after ว่า.
The words ไหม (question word) and ไม่ (not) sound very similar. Are they the same word?
