Questions & Answers about Ondska är svårt att förstå med bara logik.
Why does the sentence use the neuter adjective svårt when ondska is an en-word?
This is the core of categorizing neuter agreement! Even though ondska is an en-word, Swedish uses the neuter adjective form (svårt) when making general, philosophical statements about abstract concepts or mass nouns. You can think of it as saying 'Evil is a difficult thing.' Additionally, the adjective here is deeply tied to the action; 'to understand evil' (att förstå ondska) is the actual difficult 'thing,' and verbs acting as subjects always take neuter adjectives.
Is it possible to write this sentence starting with Det är... instead?
Yes, absolutely. You could write: Det är svårt att förstå ondska med bara logik. (It is difficult to understand evil with only logic.) In our example sentence, ondska has been pulled to the front to emphasize it as the main topic. When you do this with an abstract concept, the adjective svårt remains in its neuter form.
How does the suffix -ska work in the word ondska?
The suffix -ska is used here to turn the adjective ond (evil or bad) into the abstract noun ondska (evil or wickedness). It functions a bit like '-ness' in English. Another beautiful example of this suffix is turning grön (green) into grönska (greenery).
Could I say bara med logik instead of med bara logik?
Yes, both work perfectly. Bara med logik means 'only with logic,' while med bara logik means 'with only logic.' Placing bara directly in front of logik just puts a slightly sharper focus on the fact that logic is the exact and only tool being used, but they are fully interchangeable in casual conversation.
