Questions & Answers about Hon är så noggrann att hon läser vartenda underlag.
Why do we use vartenda here instead of varenda?
Because vartenda is the form used with ett-words, and underlag is an ett-word (ett underlag). If the noun were an en-word, like sida (page), you would use varenda (varenda sida). Both mean 'every single'.
Why is underlag in the indefinite form? Doesn't reading 'every single' one point to specific documents?
After the determiners varenda and vartenda, Swedish requires the singular indefinite form of the noun. This follows the exact same rule as the more basic word varje (every). So it is always vartenda underlag, never vartenda underlaget.
How broad is the meaning of the word underlag?
It is much broader than 'supporting document'. Literally meaning 'foundation' or 'underlay', in professional contexts it refers to any data, documentation, or information that forms the basis for a decision or task.
Is there a reason noggrann is spelled with both a double 'g' and a double 'n'?
Yes, the spelling reflects the pronunciation. Unlike its root word noga (which has a long 'o' and short 'g'), noggrann has two short, stressed vowels, so both consonants are doubled to indicate this pronunciation.
