Learn Swedish: Är hållbarheten verkligen bättre än vad de lovade? - Is the durability really better than what they promised?

Using än vad is very common when comparing a quality to a whole clause (like an action or situation). The vad acts as a placeholder representing the unstated thing that was promised. You could drop vad and just say än de lovade, but än vad sounds very natural and makes the comparison explicit, much like "than what" in English.

Does än vad trigger a specific word order?

Yes, än vad introduces a subordinate clause. This means it follows the subordinate clause word order rules, often remembered by the "BIFF" rule. If you had a sentence adverb like alltid (always) or inte (not), it would have to be placed before the verb. For example: bättre än vad de faktiskt lovade (better than what they actually promised).

How does the word hållbarheten break down?

It starts with the root verb hålla (to hold or last). The suffix -bar creates the adjective hållbar (durable or sustainable, similar to "-able" in English). The suffix -het turns that adjective into a noun, hållbarhet (durability), and the ending -en makes it the definite form (hållbarheten = the durability).

Could hållbarheten also mean "the sustainability" in Swedish?
