Learn Swedish: Man kan inte fly till skogs. - One cannot flee into the woods.

This is a fossilized expression. In Old Swedish, the preposition till forced the following noun into the genitive case, adding an -s. Modern Swedish no longer applies this rule to new sentences, but it survives in fixed locational phrases like till skogs (into the woods), till sjöss (out to sea), and till sängs (to bed).

What is the difference between saying till skogs and till skogen?

Till skogen refers to a specific, physical forest. In contrast, the fossilized form till skogs acts more like an abstract concept or state. It focuses on the action of disappearing into the wild or going into hiding, rather than traveling to a literal forest on a map.

Is fly a false friend for English speakers?

Yes, it is! Despite looking exactly like the English word fly, the Swedish verb fly means to flee, escape, or run away. If you want to say that a bird or an airplane is flying, you must use the verb flyga.

Are there other verbs besides fly that commonly pair with till skogs?

Yes. While fly till skogs is a classic combination, you will also frequently see springa till skogs (run off into the woods) or bege sig till skogs (head out into the woods). It is heavily associated with sudden movement or disappearing from society.
