Questions & Answers about Det är klimatsmart att vara med och bygga komposten.
Why does the sentence use och bygga instead of i att bygga to mean "in building"?
This is a common Swedish structure called pseudo-coordination. Instead of translating "participate in doing" word-for-word, Swedish uses vara med och (literally "be with and") followed by the action verb. It makes the sentence sound much more natural and conversational.
The lesson mentions using a finite verb with vara med och, but bygga is an infinitive here. Why?
In pseudo-coordination, the second verb must match the grammatical form of the first verb. Because this sentence starts with the infinitive att vara, the second verb must also be the infinitive bygga. If it were in the present tense, both verbs would take the present form, as in jag är med och bygger (I participate in building).
Could I just use the word delta instead of vara med here?
Grammatically, you could say att delta i att bygga (to participate in building), but vara med och bygga is much more idiomatic in everyday Swedish. Delta sounds quite formal, like you are registering for an official event or committee.
