Questions & Answers about Irrationell som den var, behärskade hon rädslan som förstörde allt.
In Irrationell som den var, what does den refer to since we haven't seen a noun yet?
The pronoun den points forward to rädslan (the fear) in the main clause. This structure places the descriptive trait at the very front for emphasis, even before we know exactly what is being described. Pointing forward like this is common when using fronted descriptive clauses.
Why is the word order behärskade hon rather than hon behärskade?
This is the V2 (verb-second) rule in action. The entire concessive clause Irrationell som den var counts as the first 'block' of the sentence. Therefore, the main verb behärskade must come immediately after it, taking the second position and forcing the subject hon to follow the verb.
The word som appears twice here. Are they doing the same job?
No, they serve two distinct grammatical roles. The first som is a conjunction used in the specific pattern of Adjective + som + subject + verb to mean 'as' or 'even though.' The second som is a standard relative pronoun meaning 'that' or 'which,' linking rädslan to the action that describes it (förstörde allt).
Why is the very first word Irrationell rather than Irrationellt?
