Questions & Answers about Eftersom hon är väktare måste hon skriva redogörelsen, varefter hon går hem.
How does varefter work in this sentence?
The word varefter translates to "after which." It is a formal relative adverb made by combining var (which acts like "what" or "which" here) and the preposition efter. It neatly connects the two events into one flowing sentence instead of starting a separate sentence with a phrase like efter det.
Could I use varpå instead of varefter here?
You could, but it changes the nuance slightly. Varefter simply indicates a chronological sequence: first she writes the report, and after that, she goes home. Varpå translates closer to "whereupon" and often implies an immediate reaction or a tighter, more surprising cause-and-effect relationship.
Does varefter start a main clause or a subordinate clause?
It starts a type of subordinate clause called a relative clause. This means it follows the subordinate clause word order rule where sentence adverbs are placed before the verb. For example, if you wanted to say she "always" goes home after, it would be varefter hon alltid går hem.
Why is the word order måste hon instead of hon måste in the middle of the sentence?
This is the classic verb-second (V2) rule in action. The entire first clause Eftersom hon är väktare acts as a single block taking up the first position in the sentence. Therefore, the main verb måste must come immediately next in the second position, pushing the subject hon into the third position.
