Questions & Answers about Du måste visa klövern och rutern innan du kan kupera.
Why do klövern and rutern end in -n?
They are in the definite singular form ("the club", "the diamond"). The four playing card suits in Swedish are klöver, ruter, hjärter, and spader. They are all en-words, so they take -n in the definite singular: klövern, rutern, hjärtern, and spadern.
How would I apply this lesson's topic (partitive constructions) to say "one of the clubs"?
To express a quantity out of a defined group, you use the preposition av (of) followed by the definite plural. For this card suit, you would say en av klövrarna (one of the clubs) or några av klövrarna (some of the clubs). The key is that the group after av must be in the definite form.
Why is kupera used here for "cut" instead of skära or klippa?
Swedish uses specific verbs for different types of cutting. You use skära when slicing with a knife and klippa when using scissors. Kupera is a specialized loanword used for cutting a deck of cards. You might also encounter its adjective form, kuperad, which is used to describe hilly or uneven terrain.
Could I use förrän instead of innan to mean "before" in this sentence?
