Questions & Answers about Min bästis och jag brukade dagdrömma om framtiden.
Why is there no att (to) before dagdrömma? Doesn't it mean "used TO daydream"?
In Swedish, brukade works like a helper verb (such as kan or vill). It is followed directly by the bare infinitive of the main verb. Even though we say "used to" in English, you never use att after brukar or brukade.
What kind of word is bästis?
Bästis is a very common, casual slang word for "best friend." It is simply a mashed-up, cutesy version of bästa vän but is used heavily in everyday spoken Swedish by people of all ages.
Does om mean "about" in this sentence?
Yes. While you might remember om as meaning "if" or "in" (like in time expressions), it is also the standard preposition for "about" when you are thinking, talking, or dreaming about a topic. So, drömma om means "to dream about."
Why is framtiden in the definite form?
Just like in English, Swedish uses the definite form (the "-en" ending) when referring to the future as a specific, overarching concept. You will often see this with other broad abstract nouns too, like livet (life) or naturen (nature).
