Questions & Answers about Om bonden arbetar på fältet idag, hjälper jag honom.
The English translation says 'I will help', but Swedish uses the present tense hjälper. Is this correct?
Yes! In Swedish, it is very common to use the present tense to talk about the future, especially in the main clause of a conditional sentence. You could use a future construction like kommer jag att hjälpa honom, but just using the present tense hjälper is completely standard and often preferred.
Why does the second half of the sentence start with the verb (hjälper jag) instead of the subject (jag hjälper)?
This is because of the Verb-Second (V2) rule. The entire 'if' clause (Om bonden arbetar på fältet idag) counts as the first block of information. To keep the main verb in the second position of the overall sentence, hjälper must come right after the comma, pushing the subject jag after the verb.
Why do we use på fältet when the English translation is 'in the field'?
Prepositions rarely translate directly. While English says 'in the field', Swedish uses på (literally 'on') for open, flat spaces like a field (ett fält), a public square (ett torg), or an island (en ö).
What is the base form of bonden?
The base word is en bonde (a farmer). When an en-word already ends in a vowel, you typically just add -n to make it definite, resulting in bonden (the farmer).
