Questions & Answers about Hon låter oss förhandla om de stränga reglerna.
Why doesn't förhandla have the word att before it?
Because it follows the causative verb låter (lets). When using låta to mean letting or allowing someone to do something, the second verb must be a bare infinitive. This works exactly like English where we say lets us negotiate instead of lets us to negotiate.
Why is it de stränga reglerna and not just de stränga regler?
Swedish uses the double definite form. When a plural noun is modified by an adjective and is specific, you need the free-standing definite article de, the adjective with an -a ending (stränga), AND the definite suffix attached to the noun itself (reglerna).
Do I always need to use om with förhandla?
You need the preposition om when you are stating what the negotiation is about. Think of förhandla om as a set phrase meaning to negotiate about or to negotiate over. If you are just saying we need to negotiate without stating the topic, you can use förhandla on its own.
How will native speakers pronounce de in this sentence?
In everyday spoken Swedish, the plural definite article de is almost always pronounced as dom. So you will hear dom stränga reglerna. Keep this in mind so you don't get confused when listening to native speakers.
